Biodiesel

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced from renewable resources, such as soybean oil, rapeseed (canola oil), or animal fats. It can be used in any diesel engine without any modifications. 100% biodiesel or B100 may be used alone or blended with petroleum diesel. A common blend is B20, which is 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is safe to handle, store and use. It uses the same infrastructure as petroleum diesel, so transportation, storage and distribution remain the same. The outstanding aspects of biodiesel: high lubricity, high cetane index and flash point enhance the performance of diesel fuel when combined with petroleum diesel.

Government Approved

Biodiesel is registered as a fuel and fuel additive with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and meets clean diesel standards established by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) have designated neat (100 percent) biodiesel as an alternative fuel.

Biodiesel Facts

  • Biodiesel can be used as pure fuel (B100) or blended.
    Common blends:
    B2 = 2% biodiesel, 98% petroleum diesel
    B5 = 5% biodiesel, 95% petroleum diesel
    B20 = 20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel
  • Biodiesel is more lubricating then diesel fuel; it increases the life of the engine and can replace Ultra Low Sulfur fuels.
  • Biodiesel is biodegradable and non-toxic, is safe to transport and is not considered a hazardous material.
  • Biodiesel has a higher cetane number than U.S. diesel fuel. A higher cetane number means that the fuel ignites more quickly. U.S. petroleum diesel typically has a cetane index in the low 40s, while soybean oil biodiesel ranges from 45.8 to 56.9.
  • The flashpoint of biodiesel is 150C (300F), much higher then petroleum diesel, 70C (150F).
  • In more than 50 million miles of in-field demonstrations, B20 showed similar fuel consumption, horsepower, torque, and haulage rates as conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel also has superior lubricity and it has the highest BTU content of any alternative fuel (falling in the range between #1 and #2 diesel fuel).
  • Standard B99.9 is the fuel of choice for use in metropolitan areas as well as environmentally sensitive areas.
